ReplyDeleteAny online prankster can “kill” their Facebook friends — swapping their active Facebook pages for fake “Memorial” pages.
Confirmed
A staffer at BuzzFeed demonstrated step by step how she posted a fraudulent Memorial page for a (very much alive) co-worker.
BuzzFeed was following up on a tip received by Rusty Foster, a Facebook user who fell victim to the prank in early January.
The so-called “Facebook dead” prank completely locks an individual out of his or her social networking account and leads the rest of the online world to believe that he or she is actually deceased.
ABC News explains that the task requires little more than filling out a “Memorialization Request” on the Facebook site and providing a link to an obituary. The obituary doesn’t have to be for the same person, just for someone with a similar name.
More social networking woes
Facebook hoaxes and scams now seem commonplace. CNN devoted a November 2012 piece to “the Facebook privacy hoax.” In January 2012, Huffington Post wrote about a “makeover scam” that offered to customize the colors of users’ profile pages. And in September 2011, NBC News dispelled a rumor that the social networking site would start charging its users a fee.
